Weathered siding, big oak barn

Wide oak siding on this old barn dates back to a previous salvage operation from 1898. The old barn was taken down and moved to this current location. The tallest gambell roof section is rebuildable as a  frame sutable for re-use. The current land owner has chosen to not do needed repairs and instead to use the funds for a new updated pole barn. Barn Cash llc has negotiated the salvage right's on this old barn and will be blogging the entire processes involved in reclaiming this old barn.

Hold Harmless Agreement or insurance?

Before you enter into any contract for the removal of an old barn, you need to address the matter if insurance. If you are dealing with a reputable building salvage company, they will carry a insurance policy. You must receive a certificate of insurance that list you as the seller and your address as insured. This document will have a phone number for the insurance company, as well as the policy account No. and policy holders address. This should be available before the contract is made binding. As the seller of an old barn you should call the insurance company, and inquire on the document to ensure the legitimacy of it. Also at this time inquire as to weather or not the contractor is insured for demolition, wrecking or razing on tall structures. And if removing the structures footer the policy must include digging & excavating. If all checks out than the insurance certificate is binding.
When a contractor has understated the job description to there insurance agent, and things go wrong it can leave the seller wide open to damages because the insurance company may not want to pay a claim because the job description may have been misrepresented on the application. Following this short guide will help you know you are covered.
The only other option is to sell the barn to transfer ownership then a hold harmless agreement will be sufficient in protecting you from liabilities and dammage.

Old barn for sale?

I have bought thousands of old barns from farmers, developers, cities, coal mines and so forth. Many of these in the Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia tri - state area, with a few scatted in Michigan, Indiana, Maryland, Kentucky, and New York.
These have all been removed, from the landscape by me. Some were in great distress, with caved in roofs, crooked walls, mountains of rotting hay, and a couple of them were even big barns destroyed by a tornado or two!
Many of the old hay barns were, The Timber Frame Design, post and beam with wooden pegs through mortise and tendon joints. The floors are wood planks as are the old grain bins. Some of the defects were as follows, roof leaks, a little Barn beam rot, some split timbers, a week basement wall in the old bank barn. Sometimes I find big heaps of trash, and abandoned possessions from a farm neglected. Many of these farms were economically repressed, deemed obsolete and left to ruins.
Some old 1800's historical pioneer built structures, had Cant Floor Joist, and thresher floor resting on a footer of handmade cut barn stone. I bought two dozen or more log cabins with dovetail notches, very popular restored as guest houses or hunting cabins. Six of the early American double log pen barns, or crib barn, have become reclaimed custom homes.

I have photographed all this through the process, and I have some fantastic pictures of landscapes as well. These photographs are available to view at: www.photos.barncash.info
