all about barnstone

Stone were used as a footer for many old barns. Stone was often gathered from the home stead and brought by cart or mule to the new barn site. It was then used with a sand clay type mortar to build the footer. A rubble wall is stone no matter the shape or size layered up and built as a puzzle to achieve the best possible results. This was a enormous amount of work and was all done by hand. This type of footer is considered crude by today's standards. The rubble wall stone construction was used in most pee 1800's homestead settlements. These are strong, durable and many of the buildings still stand to this day.
In certain arias the idea of fashioning big stone into rectangular blocks by manually chipping chiseling, grinding be came desirable. what ever settlement had the best stone around was to be declared a stone quarry. This was done for a architectural appeal, ease of assembly and to save time building the footer.
